Can I file my tax return as a civil partnership if the partnership was entered into during the tax year?

No, not for the year in which the partnership was entered into. To qualify for joint taxation, your partnership must have existed for the whole of the tax year, i.e. from 1 January to 31 December.

If you entered into a civil partnership during the year, you and your partner must therefore each complete your own tax return for that year, stating your status as ‘single’.

From the first full year of your civil partnership, you will be able to apply to be taxed jointly.
