# What happens if my withholding tax rate was too high or too low?

If your withholding tax rate was too high, you can recover the overpaid amount by filing your tax return.
If your rate was too low, you will have to pay the difference through your tax return.

In summary: filing a tax return allows you to adjust the amount you actually owe.
